Brett's breath misted in the early morning air as he slid out of the boy's dorms. He had tried not to make a sound. Afterall, it was six AM and on a friday. Most everyone was still sound asleep. But not Brett. No, he had things to do. As in, he needed to lift before school. So that was what brought the senior to the gym at what most would call an ungodly time.
As the starting goaltender for the hockey team, Brett was more flexible than most would imagine. He needed to "butterfly" and get back to standing in nearly .8 seconds flat if nessisary. Not many people understood that. He'd work with the conditioning trainer later for that, but now, he just needed to work on building up his muscle.
After filling his water bottle, Brett stepped over to the treadmill. He put his iPod buds in his ears and as he started the treadmill, the sound of Kanye West's Stronger filled his ears. He automatically began to run to the beat of the song. He became infused in his workout and didnt hear someone come in. |

Luna had slipped out of her dorm about an hour earlier, and had been doing yoga ever since, she was the soccer/swimming kind of jock so it was endurance and speed that was important to her, bulky muscles would have only gotten in her way. She had made her way to the gym because after the exercise just sitting down and doing nothing would be horrible. She wanted a quiet place where she could do all the other things that she did, the running and conditioning and such. It had become her morning ritual to do that in the gym, unless it was raining.
Luna entered the gym quietly, and didn't even bother to look around before she went and filled her water bottle. She grabbed one of the little white towels and wiped the sweat from her brow before heading to the gym floor. She had decided that she would do some running first, because after all the treadmills worked wonders.
She popped her ipod buds into her ears and began the short walk towards the treadmill. She turned the corner and stopped. There right on the treadmill she always used was Brett. Brett Staal. Her eyes instinctively narrowed, and she started to turn and walk away, she could come back later, when there wasn't someone unpleasant around. She stopped before she left, after all why should she be the one who missed out on the workout, and there was another treadmill... right next to Bretts. Wtih a sigh she changed the song on her ipod and moved out onto the treadmill, and the battle field.
With Trapt's "Headstrong" Blasting in her ears she turned her setting to one higher than Bretts was on and began. Every so often she would look over at Brett, just to see if he would notice her subtle little challenge and how he would respond.

Brett's breath came faster as his body got used to the speed of the treadmill. It was his usual warm-up speed, which meant it wasn't cranked up nearly high enough for him to work up a sweat. Simple as that. It was a warm up.
The song faded from his ears as he heard someone else step up on the treadmill next to him. He glanced over to see who was just as crazy as he was at this time of the morning and he had to suppress a chuckle as he saw who it was. Luna. Of course.
Papa Roach's "Getting Away with Murder" came over his ears, and at that, he did laugh. But it was more to himself than anything. It was like his iPod could read his mind sometimes. He kicked up the treadmill a few more notches and ran faster. Screw warm ups. It was time for the real tango to start. |

Trapt faded from her ipod, replaced by Rhianna's 'Please don't stop the music'. Luna glanced over at Brett and saw that he was running faster. She smiled, and with seeming indifference turned up her speed. She was used to this, she often ran with the treadmill at full speed, its why she was the best on the swim team, her legs could go faster than everyone elses, and thus she moved faster in the water. She looked over at Brett again and caught him looking at her. A sudden realization hit her, they hadn't done this since they stopped talking, previously they worked out together every morning... but that had changed, when the fight started...
Now Luna mostly worked out in the afternoons when the rest of the school still had class. She had changed her schedule just to get away from Brett, and now here she was running next to him, trying to beat him for different reasons. Now she wanted to prove she was better to make him less, then she had just wanted to compete, and the winner hadn't mattered.
Rhianna faded from her ears, and One Republic's 'Appologize' began. Luna nearly laughed out loud, Irony was working at full tilt today.

Brett glanced over at Luna and at once felt the pang of not working out with her. But he wasn't about to voice that opinion, especially since last time he'd tried to talk to her after "The Fight", she had nearly bitten his head off. And lets just say, he wasn't about to do take two of that scene.
Brett reached forward, about to kick it up a notch but then stopped. Was this "competition" with Luna really worth screwing up his entire workout? Honestly, the answer was no. So, abruptly, he stepped on the sides of the treadmill and hit the stop button. He grabbed his water and took a drink as he hopped off. Noting his shirt had begun to be laced with sweat, he whipped it off, not caring if Luna cared or not.
He stepped over to the leg press and after adding weight to the machine, sat on the chair-ish thing and began to lift the weights. His iPod had also started to bug him for some unknown reason, so he tossed the small, red thing onto his shirt, so he wouldn't forget it. Now the only sounds in his ears were his own breathing, the clinking of the machine, and Luna, on the treadmill. |

Brett stepped off. That floored Luna, never in their entire history had brett ever backed down. Not once. Luna continued running just because she couldn't think of anything else to do. In there competition she'd almost felt that friendly warmth that had always hung around them while they were friends. Now that was gone. She closed her eyes for a moment, So this is it. It's finally over. For one moment she forgot where she was, and her feet stopped moving. The treadmill didn't.
For the first time in her life she fell on the treadmill. Going face first into the still moving belt. Luckily she had her hair pulled into a bun so it didn't get caught. Cursing under her breath she rolled off the treadmill and stood up. She shut off the treadmill and headed for the bathroom to get herself cleaned up.
She'd always kind of thought that she and Brett would be friends again, and maybe someday they would. But not now, perhaps not ever. That thought hurt her more than she had expected.

[size=00 Brett focused on the machine. His legs were beginning to get that feeling where you know their working, but it just felt so good. Until he heard a crash. He jerked his legs forward and threw the lock on the leg press on before he turned and saw Luna. on the ground. sunshine! Luna! He said as he jumped up and started to go over to her.
But she was gone before he had a chance. His blue eyes followed her to the bathroom. He swallowed hard before walking over and knocking uncertainly. Uh. Luna? You OK? He knew the last person she ever wanted to be there was Brett but seeing her sprawled on the ground like that had jerked awake something he hadn't known was still there. He missed her. Missed her more than he cared to admit to anyone, even himself. [/size] |

Luna was suprised to find her eyes filled with tears, she'd been hurt worse than this tons of times, and she hadn't cried then. Why now? Because Brett's here, and you still want to pretend that you don't miss him a voice inside her was speaking, and she didn't want to hear it.
"Uh Luna? You OK?"
Why now? Why, Why, Why, Why. She punched the wall in frustration. "Yeah, I'm fine. Thanks for asking." There was only a small scrape, she was fine. She meticulously washed the scrape with warm soapy water, before applying some of the disinfectant the gym always had on hand. It burnt and stung but she didn't care.
She walked out of the bathroom and back onto the gym floor. She walked up to Brett, not even noticing what machine he was on now. "Brett we need to talk. I promise this time I won't snap or snarl or bite your head off."

Brett nodded as she spoke through the bathroom door, not even caring that she probably couldn't see him. Probably? I mean she couldn't. He began to walk back over to the leg press again but stopped and walked over to the bench press and put weights on and began to bench 175 to warm up. He vaguely heard Luna exit the bathroom
He decided to ignore her for a moment but then he couldn't anymore because she was right next to him and speaking. He looked at her and raised his eyebrows but all that came out was Sure He sat up on the bench and slid back toward the bar so she could sit if she wanted. |

Luna took a deep breath. Now she had his attention and everything that she'd been about to say just went flying out of the window. However she was still going to try. She sat down on the bench, facing him, and took another deep breath. "Brett, What happened? I don't even remember why we started fighting. All I know is that I miss you. It was probably my fault, but if there is any way we can patch things up. I'd appreciate it."
She stood up, and took a couple steps back. Giving him plenty of room if he wanted it. She reached up and let her hair loose, just as she did at the end of any work out. She closed her eyes and took another deep breath, before she opened her eyes and met Bretts.

Brett looked at Luna as she sat down. There was a big part of him that just wanted to hug her, but the smaller part of him that said no, held him back. Her words surprised him slightly, although he probably should have expected them. He thought for a moment as he watched her let her hair loose. But then everything he thought about, wasn't what he said.
Luna, I miss you too. Brett swallowed for a moment before continuing. And, honestly? I don't really know what happened. It was like I became an Omega and you wanted nothing to do with me anymore... He broke off, not too sure how to continue. |

Oh yes. Omega. Luna felt the lines being drawn in between them again. That was when it had all started, when Brett had become an omega. Suddenly they hadn't been hanging out anymore, Brett had been busy with the people who inevitably hung around with the leading cliques of the school. The feelings of abandonment, and betrayal began to creep back in, and Luna ruthlessly suppressed them.
Luna turned her head away for a moment in guilt. She, had started the argument that led to their falling out. "I remember the fight..." Her voice was hesitant, unsure, she was in unfamiliar waters now, and struggling to keep herself from drowning. "I think I may know what happened... it was those people...the ones who cling to the Omegas, and the Betas. I remember I couldn't even talk to you anymore because every time I tried, they would show up and drag you off to god knows where. I was feeling hurt and betrayed, and I snapped." She hung her head, letting her hair fall to hide her face, and the tears she could feel burning in her eyes.

Brett nodded slowly as she spoke. It had seemed that way, even to him. But he had been far too chicken to say anything about it. Chicken wasnt normally a term used to describe Brett, but it was the only one that fit here.
Brett stepped closer and brushed Luna's hair out of her face, letting his hand rest by her cheek for the briefest instant. And, for the first time he could remember, he saw tears in her eyes. Please don't cry He whispered. Then, the next part tumbled out before he could realize what he was saying. Luna, I love you. Idiot jock boy say what? |

Luna looked up at him. The tears forgotten as she stared at him in surprise. She didn't know what to say or what to do. She felt strange. That was the only way she could describe it. Brett loved her. Where had this come from, what had caused it, Why? She couldn't see anything to love about her at this moment. She was dirty, still bleeding slightly from the scrape on her chin, and sweaty. Not to mention tear stained.
Luna looked around, searching for cameras, or on lookers or anything like that. She expected them, expected that this was all an elaborate hoax set up to make her look stupid or something along those lines. But she didn't see anyone.
Luna looked back at him, determined to tell him she didn't need his pity. Instead her mouth formed words she didn't intend to say. "I love you too Brett." Her look of shock increased as she heard herself say them.

Brett's words hit his hears a moment after he said them. And in that moment, he realized the meaning of what he had said. His eyes dropped, he couldnt bring himself to look at Luna anymore, for, at the same moment, he realized that the words he spoke were true. He loved Luna, perhaps he always had.
But she. She could never love him. Afterall, he had been the one to make her life hell for a while. And for that he could, no he would be, eternally sorry. But then she said it. She loved him. And he couldnt stop the smile that took over his face.
Really? Brett asked as he drew her into his arms. You mean it? He looked down at her, not bothering to even try to stop the smile that had spread onto his face. |
